Your move, Sidwell kid with the long hair whom I've tied with on multiple occasions

August 5, 2011 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 76

Comments:
I wanted to run a 5K time trial today to see if I could PR. Mission accomplished. Ran 2 loops, which is 3.2 miles. I stopped a couple times which I'm guessing is due to lack of motivation and just stood around for a little bit, so I'm just going to add 30 seconds to what the 5K time would be. The first time I stopped was because I got a song stuck in my head and wanted to flash a bunch of random images through my mind so I would stop running in sync with the song. I then realized how hard it would be to start again, but just when I needed motivation, an angry hornet buzzed past me so I sped off. The second time was about a mile from the end and I just lost resolve. To fix that I imagined Billy running in front of me, quickly, and just followed.

When I was thinking about running this, I assumed I wouldn't be able to go much faster than my tempo runs for loop times (around 11:20). I did a few calculations, and found that if I were to run two 10-minute loops, it would be the equivalent of about a 19:23 or so 5K, so I aimed for times like that. My old 5K record was from 10th grade and was 21:06.

First loop in 9:02, second in 9:08. That makes 3.1 miles in 17:36, but as I said earlier, I stopped a couple times, and since I wanted to make this as close to racing conditions as possible, I added 30 seconds. This makes 3.1 miles in 18:06, which is a nice 3-minute PR. I'm happy.

This sort of fulfilled all my goals for the season, so I suppose my next goal is to be able to recreate it in actual racing conditions. I feel like I won't be able to for a while just because I don't like to race against other people, but perhaps I can get over that. I was reading through my running logs from last year and I learned that I pulled off a decent race that I enjoyed once, so hopefully I'll be able to figure it out again.
