The end of minimalist running

August 8, 2011 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Other

Comments:
I've been having some pain on the top of my right foot so I decided to search the internets today to see what it is. Apparently I'm developing Dorsal Midfoot Interosseous Compression Syndrome which is a fancy term for a compression-related injury sustained while barefoot running at high mileage and speed. I can help it by taking it easy for a long, long time and icing, but I've been reading podiatrist forum threads and the best cure is custom orthotics. I have custom orthotics, but unfortunately I didn't bring them with me on this trip.

I don't think I have a stress fracture yet, just because I haven't been running for a long enough period of time, but I do think I'm about to get one. How ironic that I escape from padded shoes to avoid one type of compression injury, only to form another.

I don't really know what I'm going to do for training for the next couple weeks before I go back to DC, but I'll figure something out. I know this stemmed from starting too fast, too soon, but hopefully I'll be able to run for the rest of the season in my sneakers and orthotics. And if worst comes to worst and I do happen to have a stress fracture, at least I did that time trial that made me feel really fast.
