calvin college: knight invite

this was a great day. woke up with about 7.5hrs of sleep, got breakfast of a banana, toast, raisin bran, oj, and vitamins. watched some steve irwin. dropped our stuff off and headed to the course. the weather was perfect: a little cold-- enough to need a solid warmup. the anticipation was building. everyone was at least a little nervous. i felt good though, nervous but confident. we warmed up, cheered for the girls. once they finished, we headed to the line. drills, spikes, huddle, striders, on the line trying to relax. the starter provided some comic relief. got out solidly, the plan was to run with ethan, chris wade, and peter for as long as possible in a tight pack. we asserted ourselves to a comfortable position, and once the crowd thinned a bit, we were running right together. 5:02 through 1mi, felt like it was going to be a long race through 3k, but stuck with the pack. split up btwn 4k-5k; chris wade moved up, e-town and peter dropped a bit, and i was in the middle. tried to pull them up with me, but hang onto chris. 16:11 through 5k (:35 pr!). forgot about the pack and focused on not getting passed. at 6k coach told me is was ~40th, and to move up. i passed a few going into the dip the second time, got passed back by some too. the last km was tough, but i felt good about my kick. i passed a couple guys, but got passed by two mount guys (actually i think i was in between the two, but maybe i'm wrong.). felt great after the race. dead tired, but excited. i didn't know at the time, but i pr'd by about a minute. all i knew was that it was fast. i was just really psyched about how i ran and how everyone else did. i had a blast running as a pack, but unfortunately peter dropped off with a hamstring problem. while it's great to have a 2-5 that can run together, it doesn't offer much insurance. i'd be psyched if we could make that pack 2-7 at least. we'll see how things play out.
cooled down with the team along the course for about 3mi. my calves were really tight, but overall i was ok. more prs to come!
