Weather: A little chilly at first
Comments:
4 continuous loops of Druid Lake (8:09,8:00,7:47,7:46 for a total of 31:42). Felt surprisingly good for this considering I haven't a great week sleep-wise (trying to get ahead on work so next week is easier) and have been working pretty hard. Ran at 7 this morning and my group was just me, Birdman, Austin, and Reptard. Pace was supposed to be 8:05 per lap but Budman and I felt good enough to keep dropping the pace a little. The first lap felt fine, only slightly difficult (typical). We picked it up a little just to make sure we were on pace, and ended up running 8:00. I still felt good so I wasn't too worried though. On the third loop I started to get lactic when Budman and I were by the Columbus statue, but I just tried to maintain. Surprised to hear that we had come through 13 seconds faster that lap. I was still hurting a bit until we got to the tower that is 400 meters into the loop, but after that I just refocused and tried to finish strong by staying with Budman. Once again, surprised to hear 7:46. I was pleased though because I never really felt like I do in a race (i.e. focusing on beating people, picking it up, running harder, etc.) and never had to drop into the racing mindset. Probably a little faster than I would have liked, but I didn't consciously pick up the pace at any point really so that's good. It would be different if I had come into the final 2 laps thinking it was time to make a move or something, but that's not the case.
This went a lot better than the last Druid Lake tempo, which is a good sign that I'm rounding into race shape. Hopefully the next 6 weeks will be good to me. I want to get my mileage to around 70 for the next 3 weeks or so, then drop to mid 60's until Regionals I think, but I'll see. Trying to design my peak to be in about 1 month from now, so the plan to is keep working hard for a few weeks, then finally give my body a break as we approach championship season.
