New shoes tempo

October 8, 2011 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 75

Comments:
It was a really nice day. I bought new shoes, and the first difference I noticed is that my heel felt like it stuck up in the shoe a bit. I realized that the way my old shoes were compressed and worn made it so that the back half of the heel was worn closer to the insole than the front half, which must have altered my stride. It also probably made me slower, since it throws off the trademark rolling stride people have when running in shoes.

I didn't do the workout yesterday, and Anthony told me to do an out and back tempo today. I ran up MacArthur to a bit past the National Geospatial Intelligence buildings (near Dalecarlia Reservoir) (2 miles there). If all went well, I was aiming for 26 minutes for the whole run. Ran 13:00 there, which was on target, and then 12:34 on the way back. Run was for the most part flat, except for the last quarter mile or so, which was uphill on the way there. I had to stop a few times on the way back due to excruciating shoulder and side cramps.
I hope now I can start to run faster in races, since my training will no longer be disrupted by my shoes.
Note to self: Although Panera sandwiches are delicious, do not eat them before running. Even if you wait 3 hours after consumption. It is a bad idea.

Also, my knees didn't hurt at all.

Edit: Stay tuned for the next installment of "When Duncan Ends Up Running Faster In Practice Than In Races"! Brought to you by GDS XC.
