Lots of Guts But No Glory

April 16, 2012 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 85

Comments:
The race started at 10am, and it was already hot when it started. The first 5ish miles I felt relatively good (and on pace), but I could already tell it was going to be a rough day. From there on out it was a mix of slow running, walking, and debating dropping out. Once I hit the half marathon I knew that was going to finish.

Just to get it out of the way, the time sucked hard. I thought even with the heat I could pull off a sub-3, obviously not. Despite this awful result, I'm not going to beat myself up about it too much. The weather was out of my control; it just affected me more than a lot of people, but there is no doubt that it altered everyone's race.

The positive. Around mile 7 I stopped at an aid station and asked if they shuttle people to the finish who drop out. Turned out they do. I had almost convinced myself to use this, but I shockingly didn't. I thought about dropping out in Baltimore in November 2010 and how awful that felt. I though of all the people that knew I was running the race and were expecting and hoping that I finish. I thought of all the shit that I've dealt with in the last year+ and how my plan coming in was to run a kick-ass Boston to prove that those things have no control over me. As to the last thing I mentioned, I certainly didn't prove that by my time, but I think I did by just finishing.

I dedicate those last 19ish miles after I considered dropping to everyone who supported me today. Also I dedicate it to myself b/c I at least showed that I'm tough and that I can do great things. I see great things coming, and nothing is going to deny me them.

I might do some sprint tris this summer and I'm already signed up for Dayton in Sept. Training will begin once my legs are functional enough. Oh, and Hudson Relays in 2 weeks. I will definitely be ready for that!
