Nationals! North Carolina Greensboro

fun weekend. Drove up thursday night and got their very early friday morning (3ish). Got a total of somewhere between 10 and 14 hours of sleep. then got up and played a little basketball (during which my back strted aching but not too badly) then we went on a run and felt pretty good. Had wheat pasta with salmon and watermelon (courtesy of cartwright) and then went to nationals to watch some races and check in. got back and went to bed at 11 ish. Got about 6 and a half hours of sleep and then woke up and left for nationals. I didnt eat anything at first because we were schedule to race basically right away in the morning but then somehow we fortunately got switched to the fast heat later that night at 8 (we figured this out after we had alsready warmed up once). So i ate a little bit of a bananna nut muffin and drank water and gatorade. relaxed and then warmed up. Felt pretty calm going into the race, telling myself i wanted first place even though i knew i would be happy with just placing. I got out aggressively and tried to stay with brenden as long as possible which pulled me away from the pack, and then i just ran by myself most of the time, which was hard against the heavy wind but wasnt too bad. I should have probably been looking to catch up ith brenden but instead i must have looked back about 7 or 8 times which usually is a terrible thing to do but i did not want to have to use my kick until the very end (just to make sure that i could get over all the barriers and not die with a lap to go. So i cruised for a bit and then eventually finished tough. I definitely feel like i could have gotten a better time but it would have made finishing more risky so im pretty happy with the way i raced. Thankfully i felt good and I was able to hold out for second place. I then did a cooldown and went back to the hotel, ate some pb and j sadwiched and then went back to the meet. Refocused, I warmed up with the guys for the dmr. We did pretty well overall in that, I'm a little dissapointed in myself because my split was a 4:22 and i think i could have raced smarter but i left it out there and kicked extremely hard the last 70ish meters and got someone by four hundreths of a second with a lean. 15th overall for DMR 12th in our heat, so im pretty happy. Almost got killed by a flagpole with tim banach when someone dropped one right where we were standing from above on a bleacher. Then we were rewarded by getting a new balance nationals flag when we asked the guy if he wanted any help. Got back to the hotel and destroyed my calf (not a day too soon) when i tried hurdling over a tennis net. I think im going to take the next week off. Overall very happy with the season and ready to go in cross country and try to make some great things happen. Can't wait.
