Canoe Duathlon

August 15, 2012 (Night)

Exercise Type: Other

Weather: Upper 70*s

Comments:
Did the canoe leg at the final duathlon w/ running partner, Jeff L. Only had a chance to warm up for about 4' easy before the runners came in to transition. Top four were all together including Jeff. We were the only ones to get a "legal" exchange as the other boats were in the middle of the river. This meant that I had to play catch up on the first two boats. Made the catch by the first right hand turn and came even with the lead C2 about half way to the buoy turn. Was on the inside on the turn and gapped them coming out of the turn by several boat lengths. Just needed to keep good pressure on to get to the final exchange first and with a few seconds cushion for Jeff. Half way back to the exchange my paddle hooked a submerged log and lurched me toward the drink. I was able to get my paddle out quick enough to throw an active brace and try to hold off the plunge. The brace went from active to passive very quickly and the slow motion submerging began. Fortunately, I was able to use the log to stand on and empty the boat for a wet re-entering. Started back paddling, now in third place and proceeded to get T-Boned by my daughters in their C2. Lost a few strokes and may have broke a rib at the chine (I haven't inspected this yet though to confirm). Anyway, cruised back towards the exchange and nearly caught the leaders but still gave up about 20-25" on the first team. Jeff ran great and ended up tied for 2nd about 20" behind the first team. First three teams had at least 1 Newman and 1 St. Lawrence XC/TF alumnus in the mix! CD - consisted of paddling back downstream to escort my girls back to the transition.
