Exercise Type: Run
Weather: Humid, partly sunny, partly cloudy
Comments:
I had a 101 fever on Wednesday night, but with nyquil, dayquil advil, ungodly amounts of water, 10 hours of sleep and an insatiable desire to put my new Nike Victories to use, I somehow got my sorrowful act together and prepared to race. I remembered the pouring rain last year, standing around watching the varsity race, and feeling partially relieved, but also let down that I wouldn't be able to run due to a few distant flashes of lightning, reducing my day of running to a mile jog in the Flippin Fieldhouse. I think it came down to, no matter how sick I was, I was running this race. Anthony had played this down as a workout so much that it only truly dawned on me that I was racing right when I saw Zeke with the glimmering, silver "Beta stick." The first mile felt like nothing. I passed a few people but I was mostly alone (5:33). I could have pushed the second mile much more, even though I passed more people than in the first (5:52). I also couldn't decide which hand I wanted the baton in. The third mile, though it was the slowest, was competitively the best (5:59). The bishop ireton anchor started just a few steps behind me, and to conduct some psychological warfare I sprinted ahead around the field. However, he stayed right next to me, saying, "So, you like to run?" I kept silent and he disappeared by the time I turned at the scoreboard, where I heard Anthony say, "Come on, they're up there, just pick them off one by one!" And so I did, but mustered a rather mediocre kick. After seeing my splits, I'm surprised we placed as well as we did. Even with my sickness, I think I left something on the course, and will not use it as an excuse for not giving a full effort. But this is only the beginning.
