Comments:
I have so many mixed emotions at the moment that I am really not sure where to begin. Here are my headlines: Today, I ran 19:14 in the J.V. underclassmen race and I do not know where I placed. Without addressing the team as a whole I believe that my effort was not 100% and that's really inexcusable. The first mile was 5:48 and I just was blissfully happy to be running cross-country. Little did I know I got out too fast and went through two miles in 12:13. After what I might call a loss of focus and competitive spirit, I cruised through the finish in 19:14, feeling more like I'd finished a capital crescent tempo run than a race. My time in this race a year ago was 21:47--an improvement difficult to enjoy when I know that there could be more. Perhaps I was arrogant and thought that because I have improved, fatigue is nullified. But at the end when I saw the clock, I knew that--like a teacher tired of disciplining a student who will not change--I was too tired to be angry or tear my hair out (a not uncommon of mine reaction last year). Congratulations to other Liam for winning, and great runs by everyone in the varsity races despite the heat, and as Griffin put it, "dustiness" of the course. And excellent work, girls team! Zeke and I sulked around the course and cheered for other races until the team meeting, where we realized that not everybody had had the best day either. I am not discouraged. Like Anthony told me, "If you're hungry for more improvement, then step it up." Something I will indeed do.
