My 2008 Father's Day 5k Race
By: Mark Grogan

Well, I decided that I would run a 5k today...and I certainly won't forget this, especially since I'm writing about it...it was the Father's Day 5k in Pittsburgh, and it seemed like a race with good competition, and a flat, soft, and most importantly, fast course.

The only problem was that I thought it started at 9, when it actually started at 8:30...luckily, during my warmup, my dad (who came down to watch the race) let me know I had like, 2 minutes to get to the line...I made it to the line, but I was about 400+ people back...after managing to squeeze my way up a little, the horn went off, I would say it took about 30 seconds for me to actually get to the start line (because the start was on a narrow path) plus I still had about 300 people to pass and I managed to pass 295 of them

I finished in 5th, 1st in my age group, in a time of 16:48...I even got a plaque and a $50 Dick's Sporting Goods gift card....not too shabby for gaining over 30 seconds on my race time, if that hadn't happened, I would've had a legit shot at going sub 16:00. I guess there's going to be another time and place for that to happen. Either way, my race today was a great sign for the season.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing is that I felt fine after the race, I didn't kill myself, and my legs feel good after...all I need to do know is stick with my mileage goals and paces, not get injured, and find something to spend that $50 gift card on.

THE END
