Well, the Georgetown Prep Meet. As I have always said, I have mixed emotions about Prep. While on the one hand it was where I ran my best mile of 5:18 in May, on the other hand, it was the site of my worst 5k race ever--22:30. Even today, the autumn weather of the cross country season already caused me to well up with sentimentality over the fact that it will soon be gone for another year. Thus I decided to "fight the good fight" of cross country today and run the varsity race despite my foot pain (which had vanished last night, but was back with a vengeance this morning). Billy and Basset had been sick and Timmy's back pain was so severe that he thought it better not to race. It was Zeke, Griffin, Boardman, Kunst, Tristan, Aidan and I on the line. I was glad I didn't have to wait around until 3:30. As I was swinging my arms and jittering my legs in nervousness the starter quietly said "Runners set" and then there was the gun. Nobody seemed prepared at all, but I strode out across the muddy field all the same, carrying with me a burning desire to be better than last year at all cost. I could not seem to get into a rhythm, especially with the rolling hills--I did not even feel 100% focused. Mile 1: 5:59. I never heard a two mile split. Going through the second loop, I found myself behind a St. Alban's Trio of people I had seen at summer running, and one who had out-kicked me at Salesianum. I fought with them whole race, but could not seem to pass them, no matter how much I trusted myself to accelerate. In some sense, I think I settled too much. The conditions were just not favorable enough for me to beat my Glory Days time. I suppose that's true for the whole team. Speaking of which, an amazing performance today even though we were understaffed! 3rd for boys and 4th for girls!
