Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Well, I showed up and I ran. But I didn't race.

Here's the thing that I think is wrong with me: I can't read races. I looked at the Oberlin guys in front of me, and I thought that they were going to blow me out. In reality, they ran the exact same race that I wanted to run. And I looked at the Wittenberg guys and I thought one of them would try to run a sub-4:40 race, and I could race with him. In reality, none of them broke 4:55.

So, I screwed up. There were two races in this heat - the Oberlin guys racing, and the Wittenberg guys race - and I didn't join either of those races. I just ran by myself in the middle, and didn't push myself. I didn't read my own running well: I felt pretty bad physically before the race, so I didn't push myself even when I started feeling good during the race.

So, I can't read the race from inside of it. That's the problem. I'm really f-ing tired of ending a race and not being tired enough. I think what I need is someone outside the race to read it for me; someone to make the decisions for me.

For Conferences, my plan is to do whatever Coach shouts at me. I'll take it on faith that it's the right thing to do. I'm sure someone else watching the race knows how I could break 4:40 much more than I would know from inside the race. Maybe if he shouts out a different goal for each lap, it'll break up the race really well.

It's an idea. But I think it would make for a better guide than who I've been trusting in the race: myself.
