Indoor 81

March 9, 2013 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Nationals. Woke up at 7:30. Got around 8 hours of sleep. Maybe a little more. Woke up around 5 time throughout the night. Never usually do that - was probably the nerves. Showered. Ate Bacon, Chocolate milk, sausage, and waffles for breakfast. Got to the Armory at around 9:45. Was amazed by the place. We sat down and met some family. Went and bought hats - next time should probably buy stuff after we race in case we race bad. Went back to our stuff and went down to see if we could go on the track for a bit. They were doing shuttle hurdles so we managed to do a 600 on the track. Everything felt so much faster. Went back up to the stands and got off our feet. After a while of waiting and watching we went outside and ran around the block a bunch. Went back inside and sat and watched the women folk race. Good thing I never got splits or anything, because I guess they ran bad and seeing them run bad probably would have not set a good tone for our race. Went down around mid way through their race however to the warm up level. Heard Elmira's 4xMile team on the speaker a lot down there. Was pretty cool knowing we knew them. Did speed d and a handoff down there. Went back up top to the track level and checked in. Watched the first heat of boys go off. Talked to Cartwright a little. Thankfully he never displayed his anger of the girls race, and we were pretty clue less to how they did. Stayed in the check in area for a while, just walked around trying to stay loose - not much room to do anything at all. Did a couple high knees I guess. They called us over to line up in our order as the first group finished in 17:40 something which was fast for the first heat. Stepped onto the track and did a stride there and back. Got handed our piece of PVC Pipe on the line.
I was put in the first position because John had like 6 bad races in a row and I usually get out the best. Today I got out absolutely awful. Got boxed in right at the start, and was sent to the back. The first lap until the 2nd turn I just hung back there. Then as we passed the start line I moved up into fourth. Worked the 2nd lap behind those guys in front. Then on the 3rd lap I managed to trip on the metal bar on the inside. I focused from then out as I was sleeping beforehand. 800 was through in around 2:11. That last 600 really stunk, but managed to hand off in 6th or 7th in 4:32 according to Cartwright. FAT had me at 4:35 but the camera wasn't near the handoff I don't think. Steve managed to get us in first at his handoff. Sam ran a really impressive leg to maintain the lead. John closed to have us break 18 for the first time in 17:54.
Was a lot of fun and excitement. Was happy to be a part of it. I hope I'll be able to go back next year and this outdoor. An eye opener for training more seriously and doing all the little things this spring.

Ran with the Elmira kids back at their hotel afterwards and partied it up with some ding dong ditching and pot man in the room next door.

I'm gonna put 4:32 down cause I can.
