Felt strong but ran a really shitty race tactically. The first lap was solid. I went through a little under 64, running in the outside of lane 1 the whole way. The next lap we slowed down too much and I hit 800 in about 2:11, still running in the outside of lane 1. On the 3rd lap I moved toward the front but didn't quite have the balls to actually take the lead. With 300 to go everyone was champing at the bit cause of the slow pace. I finally got the inside lane, but as soon as I did, these two guys right behind started stepping on my heels. With 200 to go one of them moved round me and immediately cut right in front of me. Then the next guy came up on my right and did the exact same thing. With about 60 to go, these guys were running side by side with one of them in the outside of lane 1 and the other in lane 2. I was feeling pretty strong so I went for the pass on the inside of lane 1. Just as I was pulling up next to them, the one kid drifted over and cut me off again. This was with 50m left in the race! I had to slow down and move out into lane 3 to try to pass them, but by then all my slowing down then speeding up had caught up to me and both of them beat me by a couple tenths of a second. The time was shit, 4:02.7, but I felt really strong doing it. Despite getting cut off 3 times in the last 200, I still closed in a 46 for the last 300. I just need to get better at pacing and positioning, and I need to get more aggressive. I need to get better at getting on the rail and not running wide the whole time. I need to be willing to take the lead and push when the pace starts to slow. And I need to hold guys off when they try to pass me and cut me off like that. The fitness is there. The racing skills aren't, at least not for the 1500.
