3x500 + 1x400

April 8, 2013 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Pretty good day. I ran okay, albeit with some irritation in my hip (only minor irritation - not worth whining about).

The funny thing about 500s is that indoors, you can't really see what's at the end of the interval. When you cross the 100m mark, you still have a lap to go before you even SEE the last lap. I always break up 500s really well during the indoor season, because I run the first 100 hard, and then for the next 200 I just think "Do this, and then you're already on the last 200." Then for the last 200, all I'm thinking is "I can see the finish line, and it's so close, so I can do this."

It's different outdoors. You run the first 100, run the next 100 along the curve, and then if you look left, you can see where you'll end - and it's only 100m behind you. That's the worst - you're not even halfway done, and the finish line looks so far away. Just the opposite of how it works indoors.

500s were always my favorite indoors, so I think it'll be a good challenge to make them as enjoyable outdoors. I got through today getting used to focusing not on the distance, but just chasing my teammates. It's an interesting interval distance - you learn a lot about running through it.
