MB to SB

May 10, 2013 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: WARM - 80 in MB!

Comments:
Was sweating already in the parking lot before I even began. Knew this run was gonna be a scorcher.

Nevertheless, threw on the small, nifty Salomon vest Connor loaned me - with 2 17oz "glove-bottle thingies" in both front pouches.

From the go, really liked this set-up. Another perk, too to this style: Front bottles help with staying forward!

Easy descent to El D Bridge (22:15) and easy ascent up to DC (44:30). SWEATING A TON! I was drenched mid-way up the climb.

Haven't DRANK this much in a long time. Got to the pump, pounded some water and re-filled both "bottles".

Hit the top of DT in (1:26) and notched a nice sub-:13 descent! (Somebody did trail work out there bc it's a heck of a lot smoother in the upper half).

Hit the bridge in 1:39. Stopped and stretched a little. Popped a gel and after a frigid douse in the creek down there, began the climb with efficiency in mind....And other thoughts...."Could I run up this on race day?"

:10 later and that thought was dismissed. CARPENTER WOULD RUN IT, DAMNIT! ....I'm YEARS away from that. He was 41? when he won LT100, I'm YOUNG AS F*&%!!!

One day I'd like to run the entire WS100 course. Not sure that has ever been done. I hear JK has, but I'd like to ask him about that.

So, mixed in some hiking. Very little. And notched a nice :28-high.

Easy jog back over to the pump and thought, "I'm only gonna refill one bottle...I need to suffer."

Why do I do this to myself? What a DEHCK!

Another nice sub-:8 to from Pump-to-DC and focused on a sustainable descent this time. "No cowboy stuff!"

Ok, so I've just finished coming off the switchbacks and I'm cruising along, I come around a corner.......

And, almost run into.....

A HUGE.....

BROWN BEAR!

F! It was WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY BIGGER than the measely small one I saw last Sunday. Holy cow! Like. The biggest I've seen in person!

I scared the living daylights out of (her?) and the bear TOOK OFF down the trail. F-it, LETS ROLL!

*Sort of* saw it veer left off the trail, but I wasn't too sure so I jogged gingerly down the trail, head on a swivel.

And, when I pass the spot where I thought she/he "bounced", I hear a sudden *JUMP* from the bushes. Scared "her" again! The bear took off again uphill. Afraid of my "grizzly" presence:)

Therefore, I TOOK OFF. Shoot, I don't want her to suddenly change her mind and come after me.

No chase ensued so I settled back into PREGZ PACE on the descent.

Hit the bottom in 2:51 (like a :32 from the Pump, not bad).

Let my core body temp come down a little (Had ~15oz of H20 left) and started up MB.

Things went well initially...Hit 3:25, 8:20 at the two intersections. Had very little power though. Lack of water = Lack of power. May have been low on electrolytes, too, with all the sweating I was doing.

Oh well, Up we go! Actually maintained pretty decent splits despite how i was feeling and with it being significantly warmer than last time. Hit :10 min creek in 23:42 (42sec slower than last Sunday, not bad!), but, being without water for the last :10 hit me HARD.

Body started to *rebel* a little. Doused like crazy in the creek. That seemed to help and once I cooled off a little. Legs came around slightly (Good reminder for WS...Keep the body COOL!).

Was able to maintain a slow grind to the top (didn't want to raise the core body temp anymore and risk anything). Hit the top in :35+ and Carol's in 37:22.

A good, but tough run.
