Indoor Patriots Day One - Mission Accomplished

February 22, 2014 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Actually ended up sleeping pretty well last night, woke up a little after 9 today and actually my legs didn't feel so hot. Got a nice breakfast in at the hotel with the whole team and then packed up and got on the bus, which Tyler almost missed. Did a shakeout mile with all of the 5k guys when we got there, and then hunkered down and watched the meet. We went 1-3-5 in the high jump, Lou-Pat-Boardman, so we got some points there, and Derek got second in the long jump so that was good too. When we warmed up I felt pretty shitty during the tempo section, and I was quite nervous and not very confident heading into it. That changed during the last mile. After going through in 9:19, and questioning myself every lap regarding how good I was feeling, our race tactics worked after all. We traded laps the entire race, me, Ty, and Mahalsky, and Kendall Ward was hot on our trail. But with 300 left our training kicked in. Ty took off, and I went around Mahalsky on the home stretch and told him we had to go. We started sprinting, and with 50 meters left I looked back and saw that we had dropped Ward and yelled "We did it!" to Mahalsky, who then slapped me on the shoulder and we crossed the line, although I let him go in front of me. I actually almost PR'ed, which is kind of crazy considering how the race played out. 14:24.03 was my official time, barely a second off my PR from Princeton sophomore year. I am so happy, couldn't have gone any better. We cooled down with the Army guys. Time to get ready for tomorrow. Our team is WINNING by 15 points right now.
