What can I say other than that once again, I am surprised by the result. Going into this race I thought that if everything went well, I could probably run 31:30 or around that time. Based on everything I have been seeing in my workouts, that's what I thought I could expect. The weather was perfect for this race and I think another thing that really helped was running with Woody for the first mile.
We did mile repeats earlier in the week as well and I think those were a huge confidence booster. First mile was 6:16 and I was feeling good. I felt Woody really start pushing the pace in the 2nd mile and I saw he was chasing a guy he knows who he's raced against many times. He got about 5-10 seconds in front of me during the 2nd mile and I just kept an eye on him and stayed with it. 2nd mile was 5:58 (!). I went through the 5K mark at 19:09 which when I look at that number, is incredible to me. To think that just a couple of years ago I was struggling to break the 20:00 mark in a 5K race and now I'm to the point where I am running nearly sub-19:00 in the midst of a longer race...that's just crazy to me. I was definitely feeling fatigued at that point, but my breathing was still ok and I wasn't dying.
I went through 4 miles and had a pretty big cushion on the 31:30 goal so I knew the result was going to be positive. My mindset was just to hang on and that's just about what I did. I had no gas for a finish-chute push, just kept it going over the line.
I'm really happy with the time, I think this is a great indicator of my current shape and I think that if everything continues along and I can avoid injury, this could be a really good year. I'm getting closer and closer to that sub-6:00/mile pace for a 5K and I think that will happen this year. God is good!
