Fundamental long -- What's the hurry?

May 4, 2014 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 55 breeze made it brisk

Comments:
4:30p, ran to find the Soap Box Derby that's east of Edgewater and north of the Shoreway. Kept asking myself "what's the hurry?" on my way out to make sure I was taking it easy, probably 6:55-7:00pace. Once I started heading back, I stopped worrying about surviving the run and probably sped up a little bit. There was an opportunity to cut for home to make the run 1:30:00 or 1:35:00, but I remembered reading some Canova last week who says that the stimulus of the long run happens in the last portions of a long run. With that mindset, I tried to relish in the last couple of miles rather than thinking "Oh man, I'm tired" knowing that getting through the end of a long run strong is where the stimulus. Basically, the first 75% of a long run doesn't matter nearly as much as the last 25%. With that on my mind, I hit my pre-run goal of hitting a 1:40:00 run.

I'll take 70 miles averaging something like 6:35s. Not sure how increasing mileage will look these coming two weeks with finals. Although easy runs on the days of this week's finals on Tuesday & Wednesday may leave me prepped for a big workout or big double on Thursday. Maybe a Canova "endurance block" on Thursday.
