night meet under the lights. spent the day driving out to the meet. felt pretty good-- ran a mile near the hotel to shake out and stretched some. the time schedule was a little weird, and they were just rolling through, but lots of heats, so we didn't know when it would actually start. warmed up maybe a little early, but it wasn't bad. typical warm-up. definitely feeling nervous, with the caliber of the field, but that's why we came to this race. the plan was to go out with the pack and see what would happen. my seed put me on the far outside, but i was able to get good position, even though i was running in lane 2-3. gave myself enough room to get over the barriers cleanly and assert my position. we came through the first lap in 69 or 70, and it felt fast. just stuck in it and tried to hang on. felt some separation in the next couple laps, as we came through in 72, 73, and 4:53 for the mile. the last few laps were pretty rough, but i just hung on and focused on keeping with the north central guy ahead of me. he had a better kick in the end, but i caught one guy from augustana in the last 100m. happy to run a pr, even though it wasn't a 9:10 or anything. i felt like i ran a smart race, and executed my race plan, so that was all i could ask for.
pretty sure after the race that it was my last one, and mentally prepared myself for that. but then looked at the lists and saw i was 21st. started thinking about running another race as i fell asleep. i couldn't really feel content to just leave it at that, being so close. i still have a good bit of time to make up, but who knows, it's worth a shot.
