RTB leg #1

September 12, 2014 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 50s, beautiful sun illuminating the steep hills and valley

Comments:
5:30-6:30pm After only 4 hours of sleep last night, I awoke at 4:55am and drove to BWI. Flew to Manchester, got picked up by a van of Goats and drove on to Sugar Hill, NH for the incredible pancakes at Polly's Pancake Parlor. The two Haverford teams started in the final bracket at 2:30pm. We had only 9 runners per team, so everyone loaded on extra miles and three people per team ran 4 legs and approximately 30 miles! I ran 26.3 miles over 15 hours in only three legs.

My first leg had a few minor up-slopes, but was marked by several prolonged downhill slopes (dropping about 300 ft total) which took a toll on my legs and feet, but which certainly helped me keep the pace I did. I realized about a mile and a half in that there were mileage markers every two tenths of a mile along the highway. I was able to get several mile splits which ranged from 6:01 to 6:26 depending upon the quantity of downhills. (6:04, 6:01, 6:11, 6:15, 6:20, 6:26). The last few miles were the flattest as we finished up at Attitash Ski lodge. The scenery was incredible and while my legs felt very beat up afterwards, the knees ached, and my feet swelled and throbbed, I had a great time. Still, I was daunted to think I would have to run two more legs. A great lead off...
