Run in the country

October 5, 2014 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: low 40s and beautiful, crisp start to fall

Comments:
Staying at a B and B near White Post, VA (between Front Royal and Winchester) with Lew for her birthday. Cold air moved in yesterday and there was frost on the porch roof when I awoke. Headed out at 8am and found the roads I'd scouted on Lewellyn's phone ahead of time. the run was fantastic. I felt decently strong and fresh when I started, albeit stiff and full from eating too much the day before. Decided on the spur of the moment to try a workout as I turned off the highway and onto skinny (private) farm roads. The route took me past horses, cows (on my side of the fences), a frolicking deer, the Blandy Experimental farm/arboretum of UVA, woods, and the town of White Post including the THE WHITE POST placed there by George and Charles Washington in 1750 when they surveyed the area. Beautiful scenery and as good a run as I could have possibly hoped for in an unfamiliar, rural setting.

Workout was formed as I went, but ended up being satisfyingly challenging, yet very doable. My 1 minute looping countdown timer must have malfunctioned at least once or twice, but I believe I ended up going up and down a ladder as follows: 1min, 2, 3, 4, 6, 3, 2, 1. Recovery was always 1 minute. The 6 minute was supposed to be 5. I had decided ahead of time to skip the 4 min on the way down. There may have been an extra minute added to one of the other intervals. I accidentally stopped my watch after the final pick up, so exact time is a guess. I mapped the mileage and as suspected it was a little over 6.25. Very satisfied. Later drove over to the arboretum and walked it with Lewellyn.
