Schaumburg Half Marathon

November 29, 2014 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Mid-30s, sunny, steady S wind

Comments:
Ran in the Schaumburg Turkey Trot Half Marathon this morning in Busse Woods Forest Preserve. Pretty nice morning for a race, sunny, mid-30s and a steady south wind at the start of the race. I was going for sub 1:25 today; that was a goal based off of my marathon time from 6 weeks ago.

Started off a little slower trying to just ease into the race but quickly settled into a groove. By the time I hit the three mile mark it was pretty well strung out and kinda lonely. Another guy I know (Lynton) and I were running together but we didn't talk much.

By the time I crossed the 6-mile mark, I knew it wasn't going to be a great day. It wasn't that I was laboring at that point, but I could feel the effort I was giving to maintain that pace and knew I didn't have enough to keep it up for another 7+ miles. I was solid through 10 and then fell apart over the final three miles.

I had a couple of things working against me; I've been fighting a sinus infection over the past couple of days and the path was ice covered in some areas. There was also that wind... But hey, it just wasn't my day, I can't blame any of those things. Not every race is going to be great.

Running is a funny sport. About three months ago I ran a half marathon and ran 1:26:37 and felt great at the end. Today I ran nearly the same exact time and felt terrible at the end. Same distance, I'm at pretty much the same fitness, and two very different results. Splits below, Happy Thanksgiving everyone - hope you all had a relaxing holiday.
