i love superheroes. the tv shows, the movies, the whole belief behind them. not comics though i guess im not nerdy enough to be at that point. but i have a weakness for the genre and despite how good a lot of critically acclaimed movies and kid movies are, i just cant get enough of the superhero stuff lately. and one of my friends from home here asked me if had to pick to be able to see either the marvel or dc universe movies for the next 6 years or however many they had scheduled which ones i would want to see. and i took some time to think about it. and sort of to my surprise i picked the dc universe. flash has always been my favorite super hero so that gives them an edge. but in addition the lack of frequency of the movies to this point makes them more desirable. i loved the dark knight trilogy so much. dark knight rises is probably my most watched movie or very close to it. and while a lot of people gave grief to man of steel for the absurd amount of death and dark tones to it i think thats what made it great. compared to iron man i think it is the quintessential origin story for a CHARACTER to be built around. iron man did a wonderful job mostly at the end of setting up the future movies in the shared marvel universe. yay more movies to see. but what man of steel did was masterfully show how superman becomes who he is. how his father raised him, this somewhat random conversation he has with a priest about trust, and most importantly the fact that he personally kills the last living member other than himself of his species, just speaks huge amounts about how he becomes the superman people more expected to see in the movie. the indestructible boy scout who always knows the right decision to make to save the world. but ever wonder why superman refuses to kill ANYONE. what sort of awful traumatic device could absolutely justify never killing. having already done it. and having it been the last kryptonian. and i think from this point forward that moment where he kills zod will resonate throughout all the rest of the dc universes movies. and that is a really powerful moment to build something off of. it doesnt have the same hype that comedic rdj and pretty boy-ness that chris evans, chris hemsworth, and chris pratt (all chris! haha) bring in the mcu, but its more of a thrill and suspense and very rooted emotion that it brings. i think its no coincidence that iron man 3 had much more dark tones than any other mcu film because they knew man of steel was bringing a very dark tone of its own and had to prove that they had the chops to do it while also bringing along that witty charm of rdj. though, we all know im probably going to see any and all of these movies anyway. it was just fun to think how i'd justify picking.

anyway thats my rant for the week. i've actually watched every single marvel and dark knight/man of steel movie in the past week.

p.s. michael shannon also gets my vote for single best-cast role of any of these movies as general zod. i cannot get enough of him and his monologues. he is intimidating.
