Springfield invitational 5k

January 24, 2015 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
I've been feeling like crap all week for some reason. Waking up today didn't feel much different so I wasn't very confident going into the race. My hamstrings felt sore and my legs just didn't feel great. On the warmup I felt alright but the adrenaline of racing was starting to kick in so my legs didn't really bother me by the time we finished warming up. My plan was to go out and run as close to 40 seconds per lap as possible with a time goal of 16:40. I came through the first 1000 in about 3:18 and felt ok. My lap splits were around 40 the first few laps with several of them under. It was hard to keep it consistent in the beginning because I was stuck behind this pack who at first was running consistent 40 second laps but eventually started slowing down but when I went to pass they would speed up so it took some energy to get around them. But that's part of racing so I eventually got around them. I came through the 1600 in 5:17 and it felt okay. Didn't feel too fast but I didn't feel awesome to begin with. The next split I remember is the 3200 being in 10:41. At that point I was feeling pretty tired but tried to hold on to the pace. I dropped a few 41's and came through 4k in 13:25. At this point I was hurting pretty bad but kept hearing people telling me to pump my arms so I used that as something to focus on. I was able to pick it up enough at the end to hold on for a 16:48, a 2 second PR if you count my road 5k in November and a 38 second PR on the track from last year. It wasn't exactly on the time goal I set for myself and I have some things to work on but overall I'm satisfied with the race as a first race of the season. I have only had 2 actual workouts that weren't tempos so I am nowhere near peak shape so this shows that I'm progressing. My main focus this winter is staying healthy and steadily building my mileage this winter to run a strong 10k this spring.
