Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
I came in today expecting to run some sort of incorporated 800. Because Anthony got caught in traffic on the way there, I wasn't sure if I was in the 4x800 (the first event), so I warmed up as if I was. It turned out that I was actually only going to be in the 800 leg of the sprint medley. Slightly relieved, I stretched and cheered on my team for about an hour. At around 5:00, Liam took the big group of sprint medley kids to the Hummel Field to warmup, and I felt surprisingly good and loose. We prematurely rushed the drills and striders, due to the ambiguity of the start times, but we were warm nonetheless. I was a bit nervous to be running in both a medley and as anchor for the first time, and I guess this minor mental imbalance manifested itself physically, as I stumbled for my first few steps off of the handoff (possibly attributed to the buffets from another runner as well). Despite being in far last, I felt light and surprisingly comfortable for the rest of the race, although my splits did gradually slow down (hopefully something that I can fix with experience and actual competitors by my side). I got a bit confused during the 4th lap, and managed to convince myself that I was on my third. Unsure of how much energy to save/exert, I did a half kick to the end of what actually was my final lap, and continued running for a good 20 meters until I was sure of my finish. Despite it being a less than ideal race, I still ran a PR by 2 seconds. I'm definitely looking forwards to my next race, as I think I ran this race a bit too tentatively, staying too comfortable because I didn't realize how much stronger I've gotten since the first meet. Hopefully I will soon be able to figure out how to further push myself during a race (and make sure to count my laps as well).
