Avocado Invitational at Ellington Track

January 26, 2015 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 33 and off and on flurries

Comments:
Despite light snow throughout the day, the temps hovered above freezing and nothing prevented us form contesting the Avocado Invitational at Firebird Stadium at 4:30pm. I shouted numerous instructions at my team and then drove an empty Minatour to the track, picking up the GDS contestants along Wisconsin as they'd headed off in a wrong direction and were going to be late getting there. After arriving, we divided up teams, recruited two more to even out the teams, and I did half a striders and a few high knees.

Jim and I were a team of two. (6 legs each) Weather was delightful, and the short track (320m) made this so much easier! Jim averaged 62 seconds so my recoveries felt familiar. My splits were 56, 61, 60, 58, 58, 54. Usual lack of warm-up manifested itself in the usual way, but I loosened up as it went on and was able to get up on my toes for most of them, including all of the last one. Not a pretty workout, but a fun way to start back into speed work. I had people to catch on every leg and I even got re-passed by Gillian Rabbit on her final kick on my penultimate. Jim and I earned an avocado as the fourth place team. About 11 minutes for the whole 3820meter endeavor.... How buttery it is!
