Today I finally got a glimpse of what it feels like to be fast (kind of). Because this was a JV meet, I was nearer to the top of the GDS kids than usual, and, while the place I come in in a race has little to no significance to me, knowing where I stood gave me a bit of extra confidence. I was originally in the 4x8 C team, but it was scratched, and I was moved up to the B. I ran 3rd leg, per usual, but this time, knowing the track and the race significantly better than at the beginning of the season, I was able to run a relatively satisfying race.
I started off stronger than usual and made a 20-meter or so gain on another runner, proceeding to find myself kind of caught behind them, afraid to make a move. I ended up settling into their pace (and convincing myself that theirs was a hard pace to maintain) and then found them pulling away from me in the end. After watching the video of my race I found that despite my even lap-by-lap pacing, the first 100 of my first lap was a bit too fast, which caused me to lose some confidence in the second half of the lap and subsequently the rest of the race. Anyways, I finished at 2:41, which is a 9 second PR that I am definitely happy with. Now onto the mile.
The timing for the mile was kind-of crazy, considering there were 3 heats, and they wanted all of the heats standing next to the start by the beginning of the last girls heat. All of the boys milers finished their warmups anyways, just staying on that quarter of the field. We were so worried about time that we ended up fully warmed up at least 20 minutes before my race, so Jacob and I did a few stretches and assorted drills before some very widely spaced striders. I realized on the start line that this was my first non-relay episcopal race, so I did some kangaroo jumps, high knee's, and butt kick's in order to make sure I was adequately warm.
Even though I was plenty loose, I was also very nervous, and I started the race near last. In the first lap, however, I started to make my way up and appreciate the amount of time the race gave me to work methodically. Many people around me started slowing down after lap 4, so I finally got to test my hand at tactically passing people. The race was extremely fun, and I ended up running a 5:45, a good 30 seconds off of my eighth grade PR. I'm still kind of in shock that I just ran a sub-six mile. I have a feeling that the 3200 will be even more fun, as my endurance seems to be a strong asset at this point in my training.
Note: Did at least part of all warmups and cool downs in the Hummel bowl, which was pretty crazy. It was definitely nice to get out of the field house, but for any soul considering going onto the bowl in the winter, beware the wind.
