DCCCXLV

April 25, 2015 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Cold, threatening rain

Comments:
Despite having run it nine more times, I haven't PRed or tied my personal best in the 3200m for 428 days and dropped the ball again today at the Chantilly meet at 9:00 this morning (5:08, 5:09). There are many ways to look at this. On the one hand, I pushed the last five laps, passed people and was aggressive in the final 400m (72); Anthony told me at one point, "That's the way to snap out of it." But looking back, I had so much left at the end, that I SHOULD be more frustrated. In distance running, we speak often of falling asleep during the race. Well, one problem today was I was ACTUALLY HALF ASLEEP DURING THE RACE! A late arrival back from Penn and two, less than ideal nights of sleep may have contributed, but I did not expect to suddenly feel quite as lethargic as I did. From the gun, it looked as though the race was going perfectly; everyone including Jackson got out quickly, I ran close to the back and came through the first lap in 71, a "smart first lap." Then with other people's coaches yelling that they had gone out to fast, and me thinking I could not maintain a 71, I severely overcompensated and never even gave myself the chance to go with the lead group before giving up and letting Jackson forge ahead like I should have been doing. My second lap was a 75 and my third an 80. When I came to the mile mark, I already saw the PR slipping through my fingers and Jackson up to 100m ahead. Even so, I tried to ignore that as best I could and joined the hunt, passing 3-4 people in the next two laps. I did not feel unmotivated during this section--another positive part of the race. I had something good in the first lap, completely let it go and then never recovered it. So then maybe two seconds off a PR isn't so awful--but the red highlighting of 10:15 on athletic.net lost its shine for me a long time ago. Last week's races made me believe I could run in the 4:30s for the mile, this one and races it like it make me think I'll never run under 10. For the next 3200m, I need to 1) Be awake. 2) Not fear the pace in the early stages 3) NOT listen to other runners' coaches. With Draper, MACs and DCs coming up, I'll have no more excuses not to be fired up; but for now I must get the senior paper out of my life.
