Good things come to those who wait. I wanted this PR since the end of winter track junior year and it took quite a while, but I finally reached it--and I didn't run a perfect race either. With one of the most stressful weeks of high school and my senior paper behind me, I would consider this race a celebration of my last day of high school. Recalling the savage competition that constituted last year's Draper, I thought the meet atmosphere would be deafening, but it surprised me to find the track and infield tranquil. Because I wouldn't have to run for two hours, I even took a nap which helped with the fatigue. Nerves still got to me during the warmup and I could not shake the drowsiness, even on the field. The striders felt okay and Anthony had told me to enjoy the race, push hard and not worry about numbers. Mark had also warned me that I was going to be dead last during the first two laps and that if I could just get through them, I'd run fine.

After the first lap, I made sure to remind myself not to stop running, was not in last, and near the back of the lead pack. Coming around again, I did not go with Blazes (probably a mistake). I needed to start the race at 1200m, not 2000. For the rest of the time, my form undoubtedly broke down, but I felt as though I was working hard and suffering in due, two-miler fashion. I passed Sarah Naatz's brother with about 500m to go , but otherwise had to do laps 6 and 7 alone. That's the part of the race that needs the most improvement. Otherwise, though, Anthony said it was an excellent race and a good way to start the weekend. The major takeaway going into to MACs: I have to make myself miserable--not in the last 200m, not in the last lap, but the whole second half of the race.
