July 31, 2015 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Nice

Comments:
Anxious to run anywhere but my neighborhood, I drove to GDS for the second time this week and took Fessenden to Connecticut. Finding the entrance to the Soapstone Valley Trail--which I hoped to take into Rock Creek Park--I blundered around on steep paths full of roots, taking a dead end twice and wasting the first half hour of the run. I resigned myself to the roads and took Conn down to Dupont, braved the climb up Mass, stopped at STA for a sip of water because lately my throat has been getting parched on runs, continued to Nebraska, overshot school and then looped around Ft. Reno going up and over Fessenden, Wisconsin and back to Davenport. Some parts of the run felt great, but it seemed like there was so much stopping and starting that it didn't truly last an hour and a half although I scrupulously stopped my watch as always. Too much of a coward to do strength work right after, I stretched and went home, but later in the day did 50 pushups, 1:30 planks and clams.

It's been a long day and I'm looking forward to a day off tomorrow. Getting to the beach again I had a bunch of pizza and wings for dinner and now I feel awful, but despite this minor setback things lately have been going great:

1. I've been getting up between 7:15 and 7:30 every day for the past 6 weeks--I'm not bragging, it just helps a lot with the weather and anxiety fitting in the run. Any new GDS runners reading this, do all your weekend runs in the morning.
2. I have not been obsessing over strength work; sometimes when I don't feel like doing it, I just don't. I believe I am better for not doing it every single day.
3. I've gotten my act together on the longer, aerobic workouts, successfully doing a steady state and a longish tempo.
4. Heading into August, I need to remember how much I love this sport and not dread morning runs. Anyone else on running-log, never forget how distance running is about ups and downs and you might have an entire season that doesn't go your way. But that's no reason to give up! Run good and,
