Knowing that it would be cooler, I allowed myself to sleep until 7:40. Dreading the out and back along Cape Henlopen for no real reason, I spent the first half hour convincing myself that it would be the greatest long run ever, repeating over and over, "Buy into this, just buy in, it'll be fun." If I have trouble focusing on runs I usually ask in my mental chatter, "If you can't focus now, how are you going to focus during a race?" Those lines tend to help. When I came to the end of the cinder trail, I veered left until the end of Dune Road, turned around, found another left with a sign pointing towards Salt Marsh Spur. In new territory I decided to take a chance and throw out the out and back idea, but wound up in the parking lot by Herring Point again. By the time I came back into Rehoboth proper I still had 30 minutes to run. As for the progressive running during the final 20 minutes, I knew that was not going to happen, but I did have a significant burst of pace from 1:10:00 to 1:25:00.
