Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
Didn't feel great today. For some reason I got really nervous (probably because I haven't raced in a long time and part of my brain thinks that that means I should expect to run significantly faster, which isn't a sound thought process whatsoever), and I did not feel nearly as good as I had hoped--I was tired from waking up so early (camp's going to be fun!) and beginning to feel the past few weeks of training. Hopefully the lighter day today and a day off tomorrow will leave me feeling fresh for camp. Did a brief warmup with Zeke, Jackson, and Ben. Drills felt fine, but I could tell that my legs would feel heavy during the race by the third strider. That didn't dictate a bad or good race by any means; it just meant that my legs would probably feel heavy during at least the first half mile, which they did. I think I got six striders in (I was tying my shoes/getting water during two).
The race started out really fast, and although I knew I was going out at a decent pace, it caught me off guard to suddenly be struggling to hold on to anybody ahead of me. One by one, Jacob, Thomas, Matt, and Jack pulled away from me. I was next to Billy Cox for a little bit, and then he took off. At what I assume to be roughly the 400m mark, I was significantly loosened up, and I decided to set my sights for the next person. I managed to catch a few people, and I turned onto the gravel path having gained some momentum (the split was just above six, I think). I definitely felt the gradual uphill on the way back, although I didn't feel the downhill. Perhaps that was part of me "loosening up." I spent most of the return focusing on form and trying to tap into what little turnover speed remains from the spring. I turned into the parking lot about 20 feet behind Jacob, and I finished that way. Both finish line cones were obstructed by cars/people when I was finishing, so I assumed the cone marking the pothole was the finish. I now realize that I both stopped my watch and completely broke my stride at least 10ft early. Luckily a had enough momentum to cross the line in a few more steps. That would explain why I got a time three seconds ahead of Mark's.
Did a very easy cool down with Jacob and Thomas after the awards and some food. We just went up on the canal path to the end of the CCT bridge and then turned around. Stopped for a few minutes to walk and talk with Harold on the way out, which was fun. Because of that, distance is an estimate based on how the pace felt (and a vague recollection of where I think we started/stopped). All in all a pretty good race. It was fun to see the one alumnus that I actually ran with and to meet all the alumni that I've only heard about (until today). We lost again.
To anyone still reading, two things:
1) Why? These are too unnecessarily long to be worth your time. Logs like these are purely for me to reference later in the season (I'm also bored).
2) I'll try to be more concise than this for steady days this season. I doubt I'll have the time to do anything more.
