This was a great meet. I was really nervous going into the race, as I had never been in a varsity section for cross country before. Luckily, this was the most low-key of all the low-key meets; I was almost positive that school day that it would be rained out. It wasn't, and I'm glad. I ran with Alex Welish, and I'd like to say we made a good team. We worked together, passing people and keeping momentum through the handoffs (even though the handoffs were weird this year and we crossed each other when handing off). I ran second leg, so the pack was pretty spread out when I started (even though the girls varsity section was running with us, due to imminent rain). I ran the first mile completely alone, only glimpsing Erkin about 100m ahead of me when we entered the woods. By the way, the course this year was weird. The 1 mile loop was completely in the moods, minus the straightaway from the start line. But no lap around the field. Back to the race. Even though I was alone, I felt really good (the striders beforehand felt fantastic, and we had an unexpected 15 extra minutes to warm up). My second leg was once again alone, but this time I made an effort to catch Erkin. I didn't but I think that kept me from slowing down too much from the 1st split. On my 3rd lap, Alex had pulled ahead of Noah B, so I started before Erkin. He was on my tail the whole time, and if it weren't for him I don't think I would have gone nearly as fast. At the end, I knew there was a chance that he could kick and catch me, so I started kicking with about 200m to go. I noticed with about 100m to go that I could go even faster, so I turned it up to I gear that I've never reached before. It felt fantastic, and I managed to just barely evade Erkin. The last leg was really a great showing of teamwork: Erkin was pulled by the sight of me, and I was pushed by the sound of him. Alex and I finished sixth, and Erkin and Noah finished seventh. This meet was fun, from everything to the hectic warmup to trying to get the wood chips of my spikes while racing to sprinting head on to the person to whom I'm supposed to give the baton. A great way to start the season.
