October 25, 2015 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: Misty, pleasant, some bare trees
Comments:
I went to announcements at 9:30am in the Field House, but then Sahil and I set off together because he had to leave soon and I wanted to see my parents off, so taking the vans would not be an option, in some ways a relief. I showed him Hopkins Forest, but he turned at 25 minutes, extending for a 61-minute run. But I did the whole figure eight, but sensed I had a lot of running left to do to put something respectable together. I ended up going right instead of straight for a period of time, running through a cemetery, thinking I was lost and then finding the intersection with the pine trees and the three rocks before running back to Frizzy Q and looping campus.
So I didn't feel like a particularly legit runner today, moving rather slowly for most of it, even after Sahil left me. I guess that's in keeping with the rest of the weekend, because I haven't quite felt like an athlete. My logs from July and August must have been written by a different person! If ever I lacked fire to keep training it would be now. I'd definitely like to feel like that runner again.
Now, as for how to do that, I asked Sarah if we could discuss this, because she knows me the best out of the coaches, and sent me the nicest email today, but referred me to Nick for whatever reason (who, I hate to say, doesn't seem to know anything). On the table right now is--with my opinions in parentheses
1) Should I take any time off? If so, how much, and when? (I don't want to)
2) Should I run the intra-squad Doc Steeley Invitational? If so, a 3k or a 5k? (Yes, 5k)
3)a How should I train for that and for the first indoor meet at Smith on the 5th of December?
b What event do I run there? (5k)
4) Have I overtrained either in the season or over the summer? Do I need to run less mileage? More?
(Unsure, but likely. Zeke thinks so. I did run 77 miles in seven days in July "by accident" as it were, because it didn't take place over a Sunday-Saturday week and I wasn't looking closely enough at my numbers, but that's all in the past now. What suits me best seems to be 70 mpw with a 15-mile long run. I imagine I should build back up to that at least one more time--so unless Nick has different/better ideas, this week 62, next week 70, 65, 55, taper as needed for Doc Steeley).
Addendum on October 30:
I thought I should reproduce the text of Sarah's email. She is one of the nicest, most considerate people I've met. " . . . your energy and personality make a huge positive impact on the team. We all really enjoy your company and are looking forward to the next four years with you." That couldn't have come at a better time; it's the little things.
