Exercise Type: Run
Weather: Cold and windy
Comments:
I'm quite behind and writing late Sunday night. SL had told me on Friday to do a workout involving 3k and mile pace. I came up with a rough draft on my own, and then at ECACs (where Liam Simpson won, men second to Amherst, women third behind Tufts and Middlebury), she gave me the final version. 10-minute tempo, 4-5 minutes of recovery, 1k with the first and last 200m at cruise pace, middle 600m at 3k, equal time recovery, a 600m at 3k, and then 4x400m with lap recoveries. Those I was to do between mile and 3k pace.
Maybe because of my long warmup, I felt fantastic during the tempo, but after that I decided that everything else would go well. The 1000m went by in a flash, as did the 600m. Before long I was in complete darkness (I guess they don't light the track on Saturday), and with a combination of feeling great and wanting to finish sooner, I ended up taking 2.5 minutes between them. There was never any doubt in mind during this workout--while not the speediest--that I could just attack the intervals. Hence I ran 34 for first 200m of every 400m. Without fail a strong headwind smacked me every single time I hit the straightaway, but that just made me focus on my form.
On the past four runs, I've somehow figured out how to increase my cadence, maybe a result of lifting my knees more ever since she told me back in September I needed to do that. This was an appropriate close to an enjoyable week. Running as well as I did as Doc Seeley on Wednesday (and feeling relaxed too) and fitting in two medium-long runs, I am starting to feel more like myself. Something just felt off before: I didn't like the way I looked, felt lazy, constantly distracted, etc.
Later I had a nice talk with Griffin about training--so many things are verbally so obvious as in, "Just do the training that's right for you, don't worry about anyone else's mileage" but near impossible for me to put into practice. How many more times am I going to have to learn that lesson? Need to remember that in the coming weeks. Griffin says my attitude towards running is one of profound stress--that's because up until just this week I've spent my whole season paying for my mistakes.
