I guess I'll mention the good things about my race first. My goals were to beat my time from last year at Jimmy Driscoll and to stay on varsity. I accomplished both of my goals, but I still didn't feel fully satisfied with my race. I felt pretty good for the first mile. I was thinking positive thoughts, and thinking about how I love running and the pain I was going through was a good kind of pain. On the second mile, I felt okay, but not as good as on the first mile. By the third mile, I felt really tired and was starting to have those little annoying negative thoughts going through my head, thinking about how much pain I was in.
For the first half of the race I ran how I usually do, steadily running and passing people. I think I started to slow down on the last mile. These two rocky girls who I had passed in the middle of the race passed me towards the end of the race. I really wish I could've just sped up a little bit and stayed ahead of them. I regret that a lot. If I had just kept in front of them, our girls probably would've beaten rocky.
Luckily, this is only the first race. I think 23:47 is a good starting place for me. In the past two years, I've been able to knock off more than two minutes off of my first meet time, so if I do that this year, I'll be in good shape. I'll just have to keep working hard, and hopefully I'll run better and better at every meet.
