Afternoon in the trails

February 19, 2016 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 43 and some mud

Comments:
Somehow I just wanted to get a run in and when I found someone willing to run muddy trails, I couldn't resist. There was undeniably a bit of unhealthy self punishment after taking two consecutive days off for no reason. Jogged with very heavy legs and the distance squad up to Ft. Reno where I set the foxes loose. The Noah hounds wasted no time rooting out every last fox.

The Giraffe and I headed down to Soapstone Valley at a building pace where we skipped the first portion and then maintained the pace as well as could be hoped along frequent slick patches, and the usual obstacles. Went south along Rock Creek and up Melvin Hazen trail all the way to SFS where we went left and into McLean Gardens all the way back to Washington Hebrew. Finished along Glover and Wisc to the HS. When there was footing, we moved well, but maintained conversation. One of us was working a lot harder than the other, but I wouldn't want to embarrass him by naming him. I was never straining or feeling tempo, but this was faster than I'd have managed on my own without a doubt, especially after this morning's hour long hill workout. Leg's loosened up or at least knew how to do what they needed to do, but even just walking up the front steps after practice took focus. I'll feel this day tomorrow. A quality week or two, though, would do me well especially if I'm going to take Ettinger up on his request tonight to join him for the St. Paddy's Day 10km on March 6. If I'm going to do that I'll need a long day this week and again next week. I'll need two speed workouts as well... one at 10km pace and one faster than that... maybe time for some striders too. It can be done. Can it be done at sub 6:00 pace? Can I stomach hearing a 10km time even if it is sub 6:00pace? Can I get enough good runs to be excited? I should look up the times I ran in the St. Paddy's Day 10km the two years I ran it in high school...
