November 21, 2016 (Afternoon)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: low 30s, lots of snow

  Comments:
Pace was pretty slow, but that's what happens when a good portion of the run is in ankle deep snow while going uphill, and there is wind resistance.
I was hoping to do Everest again soon, the IC time trial being the last time I did it. The weather today made it especially...memorable. I actually like winter a lot; it's my probably my favorite season. Started from my house on Coy Glen, down Elm St, then along State until I got to Hudson. I was going under 8:00 minute pace at this point, about 7:55. But once I started going up Hudson I slowed down considerably. Got to IC, and then made my way to the Softball Fields where we met for the time trial practice. I had a little bit of trouble finding Everest, but used the map kiosk to help. Everything looked much different than it did last summer. No one had plowed the trails, which makes sense, but the snow was going up to the middle of my calves. Also, the entire run I'd occasionally get huge gusts of wind go right in my face, and at times these gusts would last a good amount of time, making it difficult to run fast. I wanted to turn around at points, but I told myself that I had gotten that far already, so I might as well "conquer" Everest. Surprisingly, my legs were not that cold, even though snowballs kept forming underneath the large tongues of my running shoes. Finally, I got to Everest, and although I was extremely slow going up it, I kept up a light jog. However, I did fall forward a couple times because it was so steep and the snow made it difficult to get traction. And I thought my trail run last week in Maine was difficult, with tons of leaves covering the trail. Once I got to the top, I felt pretty good. One nice thing about having snow everywhere is that I don't need to stop for water. Only the completely white snow, of course. Ran back down to IC, and through the campus, onto Coddington, and then back to Hudson. The pace picked up again here, until I got back to the bottom of Coy Glen Rd. That was not the most fun way to end the run, but definitely more rewarding afterwards. Got back and did some stretching, and 31 push-ups. A good day of work. Definitely not like the rest of my long runs. I guess I have to stop comparing pace all the time, too. It's more about effort level, and today's effort level was pretty high. When I was on the flats, I was going at a quick pace, but with three big hills taking up more than half of the run (South Hill, Everest, and West Hill), my pace is of course going to be significantly slower. Today was not even close to my longest run ever, but it may have been the most tiring. On to tomorrow.
