So both of my alarms (phone and clock) didn't wake up this morning. I woke up an hour later than planned. Luckily I still had enough time to get to the race. For some reason my mom thought that because I woke up later than expected, I wouldn't be ready to go in time, so she wasn't ready to leave at 8, which was when we agreed to leave. I gotta get my permit, but apparently the winter isn't the best time to learn to drive. Anyway, I ended up arriving at Dewitt Park twenty five minutes later than expected. Once I got my bib on, and used the bathroom, I only had five to ten minutes to warm up. I didn't even get in a mile for my warmup. Got to the starting line, and saw Shea and his dad. Adam Engst was also there at the registration table. The gun (actually it was a sleigh bell) went off, and I tried to stick to Shea. The first maybe 600 meters felt good, but then the adrenaline wore off and I realized how much not getting in a decent warmup really screwed me up. My lungs were all cold, and I was feeling short of breath. I just wanted the race to end, and considered stopping, but then talked myself out of it. The first mile was about 6:55, which was on pace for me. But as the race progressed, I felt more tired. Not warming up enough didn't allow for my lungs and body to acclimate to the cold weather enough. Came back down N Cayuga, and sped up a little bit. At the finish line, I though I out kicked this guy as we approached the finish line, but then he out kicked me. I guess I wasn't surprised, because he was over six feet and looked like he was in good shape. Just gotta put myself in a position to not get out kicked. My time was not great, and nowhere near the 21:20 at Andris. But maybe I need a bad race to give me even more motivation to work my ass off this winter. I also need to do everything to make sure I get a decent warmup in. The route for the 5k started at Dewitt Park, down N Cayuga, right onto Falls St., then onto Lake, counterclockwise around Boynton, then back down N Cayuga to Dewitt Park. Everyone got Santa Hats, and there were cookies at the finish line. I didn't have one. Overall, my effort felt good, though, so effort level matters most. This was also a pretty low-key race. Nothing like what Silas ran today. But hey, he didn't get a Santa hat, so...Got back home and did a cooldown with my dog/puppy. The first quarter mile was brutal, I considered just doing a mile. My lungs heart, and everything felt sore. But then I warmed up, and wanted to get to 20 miles for the week. Ran around the Westhaven area on West Hill. This was a distance PR for my dog. Got back and drank a lot of water, stretched, and took a nice hot shower. On to next week.
