Race for the Cure

October 3, 2009 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: overcast and a little humid from overnight rain

Comments:
Having learned my lesson in recent years, I made sure to get a position as close to the starting line as I could. It paid off, because I was out of the mob within the first two blocks. For the first 1/2 mile I could see the leaders and ran the first mile in 6 flat. This was a little ambitious, though (and I may have overdone it yesterday on the treadmill) so I took it back a notch for the second mile to save my lungs. Mile 2 was right around 7 minutes even, which was a bit slower than I wanted (I need an f-ing running watch...). Picked it back up in the final mile, especially as we rounded the final turn for the last 4 blocks. Caugh a guy who had passed me earlier during this stretch, but he re-passed me in the sprint to the finish and beat me by a second. Nuts.

Overall, this was good. Best time ever for a 5k race. I wanted to break the 20 minute mark and was darn close, but damn if my lungs weren't on fire (they still feel torn up now). Doing the first block uphill never seems quite right to me. Not having to fight the crowds was a godsend. I've run this seven times now and it's always good just to be there in support of a good cause.

Results: 36th overall, 34th male, 7th for men 30-34
