Welcoming the Strangers 5K

June 17, 2017 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Low 70s, kind of humid

Comments:
Ok so this race was very interesting. First off, the course was short. My phone had it at 3 miles exactly so I'll just count it as 3 miles. 2nd off this 5K was free (still donated because I'm a decent human). It was also a Hawk island loop so I knew this race would be interesting.

So going into the race, I had a feeling I'd probably win. For the first mile, I kept looking behind me, however, and noticed a dude slowly creeping up on me. He was wearing a long sleeve shirt and baller shorts, so I was like "oh great".

We went out in about 5:09 and kept up with me. I decided to stick right behind him. For a few minutes he seemed to be pulling away, but once we crossed the half way mark (which was the first loop), he thought he won and did the sign of the cross and stopped. Everyone was telling him to keep going. I was super confused and got a bit ahead of him.

Well he managed to catch back up and was coming from behind all throughout Mile 2. I figured I could take him... but then tragedy stuck. I noticed that I had to poo really bad and I had about 0.75 to go. I still kept a good pace but t stared to feel bad.

So with about 600 to 800 to go, I experienced runners trot (I pooed a bit lol). I was trying to hold it in, but ya know it was useless. At this point, the dude passed me and I decided to stick on him regardless. With 300 to go, I was like "well I pretty much shit my pants, let's try to get this W". So I made a move and blew by him. After I was clear away, I managed to slow down, win, and race to the bathroom.

So I took a massive L, but still managed to win. One weird thing though was that he started farther back at the beginning and he won by chip time apparently. I still got the winning medal but on the website, he technically won. So I don't know man lol.

Overall, it was a good race. I cooled down with the dude afterwards. He was a nice kid, 17 from Eritrea, and didn't speak a lot of English. I think he definitely couldve beat me if he knew what was going on more in the race.

I also got a warm up running from Wilson to Gunson. I don't think I got all my mileage though, so I may have to go on one more run to do that. But still feel pretty good and yeah.

I finished in 16:04. The course was definitely only about 3 miles, but I think it would've been a PR if it was a 5K (and I didn't take a massive L lol). So until the next 5K.
