15th Annual Alumni Run

August 19, 2017 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: sun, decent humidity for DC, 80ish?

Comments:
Wasn't rushing as much as some years, but still didn't manage much of a warm up, although I did get in leg swings and a couple of static stretches. One rushed strider and off we went. Felt like I was starting slow due to being slow, but I also felt no motivation to take a chance and be aggressive. Worked past a few people over the first quarter mile. Using the half mile split markers along the downhill section of the Crescent Trail, I ran a 3:03. By this point I was pulling up to David Bergreen and about 30-50 meters behind Noah Kravitz. We stayed that way the rest of the run. D-Bergs and I chatted some throughout and whenever I tried to pull alongside, he'd responds and accelerate for a few steps. It wasn't annoying. It was good for me to have to keep pulling him in and staying honest in my effort. We did the yo-yo dance all the way in and I finished one step back with splits of 6:13 and 5:55 to bring me in at 12:09, a few seconds faster than last year, I think. The course was a few seconds long this year due to poor start line placement and a parked car at the turn up to the canal. I felt myself working much harder in the second mile so the neg split doesn't surprise me. I was fifth across the line with Tristan in first and Mark B behind him. I was pleased to give David a good challenge in the final mile and in the final curve. A smaller than usual turnout, but a lot of alumni and very nice to see some unexpected faces along with some of the usual suspects. Always a good day.
