Exercise Type: Run

Weather: so pleasant, 60s

Comments:
Morning workout on last day of pre-season means Roosevelt Island and Foxes and Hounds. On the jog over, my right calf began to seize on Key Bridge and even with a couple of short stretching breaks, it was very unhappy. I took a couple of extra minutes at the start of the game to massage and stretch it (and the left one which has been bugging me for the past several days), and as I began with a jog to the bathroom, they were tight but usable. Kept mostly to the untamed trail on the West/ Southwest side of the island. Was spotted and chased by Kevin Jackson for a short time, but the terrain of the trail kept him from closing in and endurance won out. Mostly quiet back there, but also was pursued unsuccessfully by Manager Rudnick. I like to think my ability to melt into the forest was my best defense, but I also suspect they gave me too much respect and saved their energies for easier prey. Eventually it was Jacob Weitzner who flushed me onto main trails and Jeff Elias who came at me head on. I used a small stand of trees to feint left and buy myself what I thought would be a decent 20 meter cushion. Sunshine ate up that cushion in mere seconds and walked me down like a collegiate half miler lapping a middle schooler on the SFS track. The calves which had held up for most of my loping chases through the overgrown trail now screamed in pain and there was nothing but hobbling for the rest of the day. I took Saturday off to allow them some recovery. Alas, my pride took a serious hit with my being tagged so easily with only 1:02 left in the half hour game... Salvaged only by the pride of having a team member so very well prepared for the season that he can accelerate like that on September 1st. Highlight of the day was watching Ellie "The Bloody Fox" Sapiro emerge gleefully smiling and oozing blood through a thick layer of mud and gravel covering the front half of her body. Hard Core!
