Little Tens

September 30, 2017 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 50s and sunny

Comments:
Today we ran in MRUN's meet- Little Tens in New Boston, Michigan. The weather was beautiful, the course was flat besides one large hill you had to go up once, and I was feeling not horrible before the race.

I warmed up 2.26 miles by myself and listened to Knights of Cydonia, probably because I was tired from the week. My legs didn't feel great, but after stretching and getting pumped up from BJ's speech, I felt ready to go.

I went out in the first mile in about 5:11, which was too fast. I was just trying to keep about 7-10 seconds behind BJ, Paolo, Lucas, and Red Cap Jack but still got dragged out. It didn't hurt my race though, I just slowed down in the next few miles as I settled.

In the second mile, I got passed by a group of people who went out slower. I got a little worried, but kept my composure. I hit mile 2 in about 10:40, so I was still keeping a solid pace.

Going into mile 3, I got gapped unfortunately. I lost contact with my group and was running alone. I still felt decently strong, though I can't remember what my 3 mile split was. I think somewhere at this point, Carlyn yelled "Riley if you're going to wear sun glasses, actually go faster" lol.

Going into mile 4, I saw Red Cap Jack falling off in the distance, so I played the slow catch up game. I was able to catch him a little after mile 4. I tried to get him to go with me, but ended up passing him. With less than 1K to go, he managed to catch me again, but I was able to keep my distance. I also got passed by an MRUN kid but was able to use another MRUN Kid (I think at least) to keep me pushing. I don't know the split of my last mile, but I was still feeling really strong.

On the final stretch, I kicked it in and beat an MRUN kid. Red Cap Jack finished right behind me, along with MATT RING! Never knew he was behind me, but apparently he did the Matt Ring scream (Lucas's mom got it on video too lmao!). As I crossed the finish line, I saw a time of around 27:18 or 27:19 and yelled "YES!" because I PRed by about 40 seconds. I also finished 4th for the team, so I was happy I managed to do that.

Overall super happy with how the race went. I think I can still improve more, get faster, and get a little closer to our top guys to help them out more, but no complaints about how I did today. I'm hoping to have a hard start to October and try to break the 27 minute barrier at Grand Classic. If not there, then Regionals.

My foot hurt a little bit and also I rolled it pretty hard on the cool down, but still not super concerned. I ran a 40 second PR and the pain isn't more than slight discomfort so that's good. We ended the cool down with a large group of guys for 3 miles. We played "Starlight" by Muse at the beginning of the run, which was LIT AF!

Also Riley Horn beat me. On the bright side, he was around me and there were a lot of Riley cheers, but still FUCK BETTER RILEY!
