The relatively late bus (12:00) messed with my usual race-day schedule a bit. Well, it was my primarily my fault--the late bus didn't help. Was up late working, but also knew that I really needed some sleep after this week, so I ended up waking up at 11:15. I ate and made it to the bus on time, but I think it would have been nice to walk around, hydrate, and generally be on a normal schedule. Oh well.
Legs felt surprisingly good--not fresh and great, but good. Left calf and center quad (which is strange, because it's usually the inner quad) were bothering me before and after, but I didn't notice them during the race. Started out in 6/7th for GDS, but worked my way up with Aaron until Liddy, Ben, he and I were working together for a little while. We got strung out after that, but the sense of teamwork was still there.
I was pretty happy with my consistency--both throughout this race and over the course of the season--but I know I could have (and can, more importantly) do better. A few areas of weakness:
1) I'm holding back on steep downhills. I need to keep my form crisp and basically sprint down them without being afraid of them tiring me out.
2) I need to accelerate out of turns.
3) I can't keep being afraid of cramping up. This is the first season in which I haven't gotten terrible core cramps during my races. Maybe that's due to strength or hydration (or the pickle juice!), but it means that I really have no reason to stay conservative in races. My cardio is there.
4) My leg speed is terrible. I've had to opt out of a lot of speed work this season because it exacerbates the pain. Hopefully the taper will help me feel fresher--there doesn't seem to be time to built more speed.
5) I need to be sleeping, icing, and rolling. These two weeks have been incredibly busy, but I could absolutely have found time to be taking care of my body if I had been slightly more disciplined. These next two weeks are prime time to do just that.
6) I need to cheer more and better. This meet was awesome--it was the first time in a while my race wasn't last, so I was able to run around cheering without worrying about overexerting myself. That being said, I think I can cheer more before my races without tiring myself. Also I need to strike a balance between supportive cheering and competitive advice. Some people came up to me afterwards and said that I made them feel like the whole race rested on them and that I forced them to focus in and compete. Others said that they would have preferred a simple "you got this." I'll try to unify (or discern) between the two better next week.
Team was fantastic today. Every athlete in every race was working hard, and it showed. Beyond breakthrough races and top-scoring team finished, the sense of teamwork was palpable and stronger than it has been. No competition whatsoever in the varsity boys--we were working together 100%, and I haven't felt that in a while. Very excited for MAC/ISLs after this.
