The Ben Lambert Memorial Mile

November 5, 2017 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 50s

Comments:
Today, I raced my favorite distance for the first time, since May- the one mile. I set up the Ben Lambert Memorial mile this week to get the track people a chance to run the mile again. Though only 6 raced, it was still a great time and we got a lot of people to come out.

My warmup was pretty sporadic (and I logged it wrong), but going in I felt ok. My lower back was sore from raking a long time, but I didn't feel horrible. My goal going in was to try and break 4:40 and go for the win, however, I knew the win would be very tough with Paolo in the race.

The race went off with me, Paolo, Chris, and Austin. I initially got caught behind the 3, but was able to get right behind Paolo 200 meters in. We went through the 400 in 67. After the first 400 Paolo and I separated from the others by a bit. I knew my chances against Paolo were slim, so I took a risk at 750 meters. I flew by Paolo and took the lead. We hit the 800 at 2:15. For the next lap, I led and tried to increase the pace to shake him off but I couldn't quite do it. With one lap to go, I still felt strong and tried to make a push. Down the back stretch Paolo tried making a move and I responded by holding him off.... until 200 meters to go. With 200 meters to go, I ran out of fuel and Paolo proceeded to absolutely shred me. He managed to put 7 seconds on me in 200 meters RIPPPPPPP! He finished in 4:25 and I got in at 4:32. Though I was disappointed with the end of the race, I was super surprised by my time. Last year at the time, I ran a 4:42 1600m, so I mean I destroyed my initial time expectations.

Overall I'm more than satisfied with the effort. I think once I officially get back on the track I can knock my time down much further if I continue to increase my mileage and work hard. This got me really hype for track and I'm thinking 4:25 indoor by the end of the season may be within my wheel house. We will certainly see!
