One of my favorite quotes in the world is "this too shall pass." This break, I have been doing a lot of reading. Yesterday I read the book Looking For Alaska by John Green.
The book is about this guy named Miles (nicknamed Pudge) who falls in love with this girl named Alaska at boarding school. Anyway, Pudge's favorite class is World Religions. And there was a scene in the book where Dr. Hyde, who teaches the World Religions class, talks about how everything falls apart eventually. And while I was reading this, I was reminded of my quote.
So what does this have to do with anything? Well last night I drank half a fifth of vodka (the whole fifth was just $8) and 4 beers. So I got kind of drunk of course, and I woke up this morning hungover and shit. But then I remembered, "this too shall pass." I wasn't going to stay hungover forever; I was going to feel better in just a few hours after chugging water, eating some food, and running. And I did just that.
But there's more to this.
You see, today wasn't very cold - just 8 degrees - but I wasn't fully prepared for the wind sinze it hasn't been windy at all the entire time I have been home. For the first half of the run, I was running with the wind, got hot, and sweated a lot. But then when I turned around into the wind, all that sweat froze - particularly on my hat. So my head and especially my ears got very cold and uncomfortable. And I had a long way to go until I got home. But it was ok, because I knew that "this too shall pass."
But that wasn't all. For some reason, my peter froze too. I wore my favorite pair of tights that I have worn in colder weather, but I guess the wind or something today really made things bad. And no, my peter wasn't just cold, it was frozen. This was the first time this had happened since I ran a 10k on Thanksgiving in 2014 in 0 degrees with an even thinner pair of tights than the ones I had on today.
So to any of you reading this that have also had a frozen peter, you know that the pain doesn't come until you warm up. Yup, that hurt, but I knew that that hurting too would pass. I just had to bear with a few minutes of intense pain while my peter thawed. And then it passed. I would be ok.
So when it comes to running kids, remember that no matter how much you are hurting during a race or a rep in a workout, remember that that pain too shall pass.
