Today, I raced the mile and 800m at the Jet's Pizza Invitational. T'was a great season opener that showed I was definitely in great shape, so here's the breakdown.
Warmup: Warming up for the mile, I didn't know what to expect. I had my goal set and a race plan in mind, yet I didn't know what kind of shape I was really in. I warmed up around Saginaw's track facility and listened to "Knight of Cydonia" and "Showbiz" by Muse and of course got hype as fuckkkkkk (all of the warmups and cooldowns are just estimates btw). I also decided to experiment and chew not one, but 2 pieces of run gum. I went into this race shaking (shout out to Nick Symmonds).
Mile: I went in the first lane and looked to find position. I think somewhere in the first lap, I got spiked. I didn't really notice it, but now I have a dope spike mark. I came through the 400 in 66-67 feeling very comfortable and right on pace. My heat was beating hard from the run gum, but I couldn't have felt much better. I lurked in about 3rd place behind 2 guys with plenty left. I hit the 800m in 2:12-2:13 and got ready to make my move with 600m to go. The two guys in the front picked up the pace, so I actually didn't go until 450 to go. With 450 to go, I blasted to the lead in a desperate effort to win the heat. I think Austin said I came through 1200m in 3:18-3:19. With one lap to go, I saw 3:32 or so and knew I was in for something special if I kept this pace up. I continued to send it hard on the last lap, trying to keep up my lead. With 150 to go, (que Ben Lambert Memorial Mile PTSD flashback), 3 guys left me in the dust. I tried to battle them back, but unfortunately didn't have the same kick. However, unlike the Ben Lambert Memorial Mile, I still had something left. I still finished strong despite getting passed and yelled at the line as I saw my former club record back in reach. I crossed the line in 4:26.02, which I couldn't be happier with. I was super hype with that time. Though Paolo will probably take back the record in a few weeks, I was happy to battle him back.
Aftermath/cooldown/warmup: After the race ended, I vomited like 3 times straight. I felt super dizzy from the run gum and could hardly stand. Guess it just goes to show that i gave it everything RIP. Afterwards, I cooled down with Lucas and Zach Widner and had some good conversation with him. He told me he's going for the Olympic half marathon standard, so DAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMNNNN. I also did a second warm up for the 800m with no expectation as all. Lucas's dad gave me some advice on how to replenish my body, but I knew I was feeling pretty meh.
800m: I went out pretty tired for the 800m. In the back of mind, I wanted to try and win the heat, buttttttt I knew it wasn't going to happen when I couldn't quite get near the front from the start. I went out in 61 and I made a few surges throughout the race and tried to make something happen, but my body was tired from the mile. I was able to kind of outkick an MRUN kid and I finished in a respectable 2:04.76. So I was happy with it, considering I PRed in the mile by 5 seconds earlier.
So overall, it was an amazing day on the track. I couldn't be happier with how the mile went and I still had a solid 800m as well. I can't wait to see what else this season has in store. Also shoutout to everyone else for having great races and sendingggggg it harrrrrrrrrrrrdddddd
